What Does God Say About Your Body

Does God Care What You Do with Your Body | Worship Hour Sermon

The overarching theme in the Bible is that the human body was created by God therefore, we should respect our bodies by striving for both bodily and spiritual health. This is clearly illustrated by Corinthians 6:19-20, which states, Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

In this letter to the Corinthian church, the Apostle Paul says that our bodies are not ours to do with as we please, but are another means by which we can glorify God. This is also exemplified by Pauls message to the Roman church, in Romans 12:1: I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.

To Paul, bodies are part of Gods creation and thus are meant for the worship of God.

What Does The Bible Say About Mental Self

Mental self-care is a huge component of any self-care routine. It involves managing how you think and feel and increasing the positive habits you have that benefit the way you think and feel. Mental health, however, is a tricky subject for many because our thoughts often wander towards labels that come from being mentally unhealthy.

Mental health scriptures often look like promises, affirmations, and declarations of your capabilities because of who God is. These scriptures also remind us to talk about our feelings.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what Gods will ishis good, pleasing and perfect will.

Romans 12:2

This may be one of the most well known scripture that also talks about the health of your mind. We are called to a life of renewing our minds, breaking the destructive mindsets, and focused on the word of God.

For God gave us not a spirit of fear but of power and love and self-control. 2 Timothy 1:7 ESV

Power, Love, and self-control. These are the things God gave us in exchange for our fear. This is what you have instead of the fear that may paralyze you. Or maybe the fear just keeps you from speaking to professional help. Or maybe the fear keeps you from simply asking for help. We do not have to do this world alone, and we do not have to live with the stress.

We can find the motivation it takes to take care of our health. Taking care of ourselves is not selfish!

Caring For Yourself Is Caring For Others

When asked what the greatest commandment was, Jesus replied that we should love the Lord with all our heart and love our neighbors as ourselves. This is often blindly quoted. But when we really break this down, we are being commanded to love our neighbors based on the way we love ourselves. Now, friend, what would it look like if you were to love your friends, family, neighbors the way you are currently loving yourself?

I know I would fail that test miserably.

I have been pouring from an almost empty cup.

It is exhausting!

As I have been more intentional about living life Gods way, I have done some research on what the bible says about self-care. The following scriptures give me direction.

We often hear a lot about how important it is to take care of others. May God help us to take care of others cheerfully, consistently, and always to the glory of God. May God continually strengthen us as we take care of our family members, take care of the poor and needy, and take care of the elderly. As we have been reminded time and time again, we are privileged to serve!

Dear Friends, it is however crucial not to forget how very important it is to take care of ourselves! If we focus on taking care of others and neglect taking care of ourselves, we are creating a perfect recipe for burnout, breakdown, fatigue, stress and discouragement. When we dont take care of ourselves, we cannot operate in our maximum capacity for God, we are not encouraging ourselves, and we are actually not bringing the ultimate glory to God in the long run!

As I said, there are days when Im just not feeling motivated about taking care of myself through self-care.

Sometimes I might feel lonely, sad, or anxious.

Sometimes I get overwhelmed just thinking about going to the gym or needing to do a hundred things, and somehow I have to take the dogs for a walk too.

But, I am comforted knowing God is with me. And so can you!

When you:

  • Feel alone, know He is there, and sense His tenderness.
  • Are sad, be comforted by His presence.
  • Are overwhelmed, God cheers you on and helps you see how to take it one step at a time.

Having God with you is what can help you overcome anxiousness, make better choices, and take better care of yourself throughout the day.

We Are Taught That Certain Things Are Good For Our Bodies

  • According to the Word of Wisdom, what are some things the Lord says are good for us?

Fruits, vegetables, and wholesome herbs are good for us. We should use them with wisdom and thanksgiving.

The flesh of birds and animals is also provided for our food. However, we should eat meat sparingly . Fish is also good for us to eat.

Grains are good for us. Wheat is especially good for us.

  • How has the use of these things blessed you?

First Corinthians : 27 But I Discipline My Body And Keep It Under Control Lest After Preaching To Others I Myself Should Be Disqualified

Paul is telling the Corinthians, and us, that it takes a very concerted effort to keep our bodies under control. Jesus said that we are to Strive to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able . The word for strive is stronger in the Greek as it means to contend with, to agonize over so Paul is saying its very difficult to keep our bodies under control. Amen? When Paul wrote that he didnt want to become disqualified, I dont believe he was talking about losing his salvation but perhaps of being disqualified to be as minister of the gospel as they are required to live a holy life and one above reproach .

Don’t Miss: What Are All The Commandments In The Bible

Below Are Some Of The Comments And Scriptures I Have Encountered:

1.) The Bible says, Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility value others above yourself, .

I find this one to be the most popular verse that convinces Christians that caring for others at the expense of themselves is what God is saying. I think this is not true. Again, Paul is not implying that we do not care for ourselves at all. He says to value others more than yourself. I do not see him saying care for others at the expense of yourself. I see him implying once again that you are to care for yourself, but should care for others even more. Again, not a verse saying you shouldnt care for yourself, but that you should value others more than yourself.

2.) Also, because of Scriptures like this, I think people confuse selfishness with self care, and mistakenly loop the two very different things into one and the same.

Again, this would only be true if you did not care for others and only cared about yourself. People think, I cannot be selfish, which means I cannot care about myself at all. This is contrary to what God wants. He just does not want us to be consumed with only self, but nowhere does it say that He does not want you to think about or care for yourself at all.

3.) Oftentimes those that we praise in the church are those who run themselves ragged.

Since people get lifted up like this in the church, we can often times think that we need to follow their example.

You Are A Whole Person Not Just A Soul

How Your Body is the Temple of God – 4 Scriptures ðª

If like me, you have attended churches that emphasize the spiritual disciplines but view other aspects of life that often factor into todays concept of self-caresuch as making time for rest, pursuing physical health, enjoying the arts, or celebrating His gifts in the natural worldas not worthy of our attention or time, this is an important truth. We can easily forget that our bodies, hearts, and minds are important parts of who we are as human beings.

But unlike the Gnostics and their modern-day dopplegangers, who teach that the physical body is evil and spiritual knowledge is all that matters, Scripture paints a different picture. It teaches that God designed us as multifaceted, with a body, mind, spirit, heart, and soul that make up our whole beingand that all of those parts of us are made to love and serve Him .

Anxiety In A Man’s Heart Weighs Him Down But A Good Word Makes Him Glad Proverbs 1: 25 Esv

Anxiety can make us very unhappy and also affect our emotional and mental health. This verse points out the effects of anxiety while also providing a remedy.

‘A good word makes him glad’ points to two things. First, if we provide encouragement for an anxious person it will help to make him or her feel better. Secondly, a good word may point to the word of God.

There are many promises and encouraging verses in the Bible that talk about anxiety. One such verse is Psalm 55:22. It states, “Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you he will never permit the righteous to be moved”.

Seek First The Kingdom Of God

Matthew 6: 25-34 is a powerful passage for those who struggle with anxiety.

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendorwas dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe youyou of little faith? So do not worry, saying, What shall we eat? or What shall we drink? or What shall we wear? For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Matthew 6:25-33

The last verse of this passage so quickly sums up the foundational activity of self care. Seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness. Why? Because then all of the necessities of life are freely given! Food, drink, clothing, reassurance of safety and care. These things are part of Gods blessing to those who seek His kingdom.

Should Christians Buy Health Insurance

I believe that all families should be covered with some type of healthcare. In John 16:33 Jesus said, I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. Jesus made it abundantly clear that we would go through trials.

Healthcare is a form of preparing yourself and your family. Medical costs are skyrocketing! You never want to have to pay for a medical emergency out of pocket. Many people think that it is showing a lack of faith. No! Above everything else we trust in the Lord. However, it is us being wise and caring for our family. If traditional health insurance costs too much, then you can look into more affordable options. There are many Christian insurance alternatives that you can take advantage of such as Medi-Share.

7. 1 Timothy 5:8 Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

8. Proverbs 19:3 A persons own folly leads to their ruin, yet their heart rages against the LORD.

God has blessed us with medical resources and we should take advantage of them.

God is all knowing. He is aware of the impact eating certain things will have on the body. That is why He outlined in detail the things He expects us to eat and the things we should not eat.

God went on to categorize animals based on ‘clean’ and ‘unclean’ and also gave a description for birds and animals that live in water that shouldn’t be eaten.

A Joyful Heart Is Good Medicine But A Crushed Spirit Dries Up The Bones Proverbs 1: 22 Esv

Health and wellness are also about how we think and feel. Our emotions have the ability to cheer us up or to dampen our moods. A joyful heart speaks to emotions such as happiness and contentment.

When we are happy it is reflected in our mood, conversation, and how we relate to others. A joyful heart is great for our health and also those we come in contact with.

First Corinthians : 16

Back to the first verse idea where Paul was talking about the body being the temple of the Holy Spirit and here, in these two verses, he is saying nearly the same thing with one exception God will destroy those who destroy Gods temple. This could well mean that we are commanded to take care of our body and that God will hold us accountable on the day after our death when well be judged .

Why God Cares About How You Care For Yourself

“Will God Take Care Of Me?” Luke 12:22-34

I write this article because I have encountered many faithful, inspiring, powerful men and woman of the Lord who for some reason do not believe that caring for themselves matters to God. For years, they have functioned under the belief that they were last on the list of people to care for because this what was righteous or godly. Unintentionally, often times, the church sends a message through its preaching and by the example of others that caring for yourself is ungodly and selfish. When carried out this common belief can lead to health issues, anxiety, depression, job burn out, relational distress, and much more.

Now do not get me wrong. I am not preaching to be selfish and that you are all that matters in this world. What I am trying to communicate is the idea that it is important that we understand and know that God desires for us to care for ourselves physically, emotionally, spiritually, and relationally.
